ASU Chapter of
Sigma Xi

The Scientific Research Society
ASU

Sigma Xi (Xi is pronounced with a "Z" sound—"Zi"—as in "xylophone") was founded in 1886 to honor excellence in scientific investigation and encourage a sense of companionship and cooperation among researchers in all fields of science and engineering.

You'll find that spirit alive in the ASU chapter. Our focus, reflecting the goals of The New American University, is to

  • build a transdisciplinary network of researchers on campus,
  • improve science education,
  • support student research, and
  • promote the public's understanding of science for the purpose of improving the human condition.

The ASU chapter has nearly 300 active members. Our members include undergraduate students, graduate students, academic professionals, professors, and professional scientists living in the area. Our primary activities include

  • a Fall and Spring luncheon,
  • an Annual Banquet to induct new members and present awards,
  • and the granting of five $400 grant-in-aid awards to undergraduate and graduate students.

We would welcome the addition of other events to give members more opportunities to meet and develop opportunities for collaboration. If you have a suggestion for events, please contact one of the officers below.

For more information on the National Program, visit the Sigma Xi website.

We welcome you to join this network of researchers by participating in our programs.

Fall 2009 letter from Anne Stone

October, 2009

Dear Sigma Xi Members,

I am writing to welcome you to another year of lectures and grant opportunities sponsored by the ASU Chapter of Sigma Xi. This academic year your chapter officers are as follows.

  • President - Anne Stone
  • President elect - Pierre Deviche
  • Treasurer - Elliott Goldstein
  • Secretary - Brenda Baker

We would like to expand the positions on the executive committee to include one or two people willing to work on chapter develpment. This would include expanding membership (particularly to scientists at other ASU campuses and outside of academia) and helping us raise money to sponsor additional student grants as well as outside lecturers such as those from the Sigma Xi distinguished lectureship program .

The ASU chapter currently has over 300 active members. Our members include undergraduate students, graduate students, academic professionals, professors, and professional scientists living in the area. Our primary activities include

  • Fall and Spring Luncheons and Lectures,
  • an Annual Banquet to induct new members and present awards, and
  • awarding five or six $400 grants to undergraduate and graduate students.
(Please see the Grant-in-aid page for our Spring 2009 grantees, project summaries, and pictures!)

Your chapter affiliation dues are the source of funding for the grants. Therefore, by paying your dues and affiliating your membership to the chapter, you are helping students carry-out research at ASU. (To change your affiliation, go to our chapter's membership page for instructions.) We also appreciate any extra donations toward grants for students, as well as for expanding our opportunities to host outside lecturers. We are also considering offering a chapter Young Investigator Award to outstanding new faculty (within 10 years of highest earned degree). The awardee would give a lecture about his or her research and be nominated for the national Young Investigator Award.

Please keep in mind the value of an Associate Membership to an undergraduate or graduate student. Membership acknowledges their research accomplishments and it is a nice addition to their vitae. Nomination forms are available on the website's membership page.

Sigma Xi was founded to honor excellence in scientific investigation and encourage a sense of companionship and cooperation among researchers in all fields of science and engineering. If you have an idea for a chapter activity towards this mission, please contact me.

Sincerely,
Anne Stone, PhD
